Does the caravan continue to Ethiopia?

A report by Bert R. - Global Key Account Manager at helsa Fashion Shaping

helsa Fashion Shaping is active in many countries around the world with production facilities and sales offices. This international appearance makes us an attractive partner for many global brands as they can secure quality and their “signature” at all production locations.

This unique selling point is more and more important to us and our customers as the business is requiring still faster responses and therefore we are constantly, pro-actively analyzing new potential markets.

One of the markets that has attracted our attention in the past year is Ethiopia. Several big brand names have directed our evaluation focus towards this East African country.

Ethiopia is Africa's oldest independent country and its second largest in terms of population. (approximately 100 million citizens). Apart from a five-year occupation by Mussolini's Italy, it has never been colonized.

There are several good reasons for Ethiopia potentially being next big garments exporting entity. The country offers the best conditions for the textile industry:

  • Local availability of cotton
  • Political stabile situation
  • African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) which gives certain countries in sub Saharan Africa duty free access to US market
  • Gateway to the African consumer market and fast route to Europe (via Suez Channel)

Mainly Chinese investors have put $ 1.2 billion investments in the Ethiopian textile and clothing industry in the first 6 month of 2016. Also, investors from India and Turkey have found their way to this market. International fashion brands have started pilots in Ethiopia and growth can go fast if the situation remains favorable as it is.

As we are constantly in a dialog with our Global Key Accounts about where our products and services are required we will stay alert and you should not be surprise to read about a new African episode in the history of helsa Fashion Shaping in the foreseeable future in this blog!
